The Purpose of Prison: What is Freedom?

Imagine you are Samuel Randolph. You know, without a doubt, that you are innocent. You've been accused of a crime you didn’t commit, yet despite your relentless cries, your shouts for justice, no one listens. No one believes you. The system that is supposed to protect the innocent instead condemns you to a life behind bars awaiting a death date, surrounded by darkness and isolation. Your freedom is stripped away, and with it, your dignity. You stand, resolute in your truth, but a nagging question lingers: If you know you're innocent, what else is there to prove?

This is the dilemma faced by countless individuals who find themselves wrongfully convicted, and imprisoned for crimes they didn’t commit. How does one maintain one’s sense of self when one's truth is ignored? Is there no such thing as innocence in a world that only acknowledges degrees of guilt? Or do you stand firm, believing that, in time, the truth will prevail?

Dena Jangdhari, M.Ed, is a dedicated community leader, development/events organizer, and House Director of the Civic Club of Harrisburg. She is also the creator of the "Be Empowered Be Yourself" (BEBY) Radio Show/Podcast, a platform that encourages authenticity and empowerment among its listeners. A native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Dena has over a decade of experience as a servant leader and independent consultant, known for her innovative approach to creating and executing programs that support both military and civilian communities.

Dena's passion for empowering others is evident in her creation of the BEBY Radio Show/Podcast, a safe space for individuals to embrace their true selves. The show features heartfelt conversations, affirmations, and compassion, inspiring listeners to accept themselves and support others in doing the same. BEBY's impact is far-reaching, resonating with audiences in 19 countries.

Dena holds a Master’s degree in Education from Northcentral University, a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Ashford University, and an Associate of Arts in Business Administration from American InterContinental University, where she graduated with honors. She is deeply committed to prison reform and is an active volunteer with numerous organizations, including Hospice, the Pennsylvania Prison Society, Friends Committee on National Legislation Advocacy Team, Heeding God's Call to End Gun Violence, Blacks in Government, The National Council of Negro Women, National Coalition of 100 Black Women, The Civic Club of Harrisburg, and Operation Happy Feet, which supports liberated Afghans/New Americans.
